  • On the first Anglo-Boer War of 1880 to 1881, written from Pietermaritzburg in 1882 by an author whose only motive was to "endeavour to give a truthful and impartial narrative of the affairs concerning the Transvaal"; this is a copy of the third edition of 1900
  • No maps, illustrations or index, the book is divided into four parts 
  1. The British in the Transvaal (128 pp)
  2. The Battle-fields (194 pp)
  3. The Peace (16 pp)
  4. A Journey Through the Transvaal (178 pp)
  • scarlet cloth-board - embossed gilt-lettered to upper panel - strengthened with new spine, endpapers and head-band, original spine cover laid down
  • top page-edge gilt, other page-edges uncut, viii, 574 pp + 2 pp publisher's list
  • complete and unmarked, corners are lightly bumped, central 10 mm of front edge has lifted slightly, page-edge gilding has dulled, a few small foxing spots to early pages, uncut page-edges sunned
  • an attractive original edition of a book now more widely available in facsimile
