First edition: 492 pages + 16 pages publisher's catalogue, folding map coloured in outline held in place simply with a piece of tape, 2 lithographic plates 1 as frontispiece, 5 engraved plates and 2 plans, bookplate on front paste down end paper, several pages unopened,green cloth stamped blind on the covers, titled gilt on the spine, uncut edges, corners bumped, working loose at the hinges, a good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 1, page 565. An account of Mr Freeman's third visit to Africa, in 1848 ... The author was requested by the Directors to report on their stations ... and in addition to the chapters dealing with the missionary stations the volume contains much information respecting the history and geography of the countries traversed, together with a mass of useful and interesting matter concerning the native tribes of South Africa. There is a short history of the Hottentots, with a summary of their grievances, a description of the Kat River and other missionary settlements, notes on the Griqua, Bechuana, and Basuto tribes, and a chapter on Kaffir history. There is a large map of "the Sovereignty beyond the Orange River," showing the boundaries of the Orange Free State at this period.
