Register

The author was the wife of the captain, who, in his Preface, paid tribute to her industry and accuracy.

Maroon cloth-boards, silver to upper panel and spine, plain chocolate endpapers, frontispiece, illustrated title-page, xix of prelims, including details of the Brassey, named after her owners, and her crew, + 492 pp of text and appendixes with 68 b/w illustrations in the text + 16 pp of publisher's announcements.

The Brassey was a 531-ton, 171-ft-long three-masted topsail-yard schooner with a fair-weather speed of 8 knots under sail, and with auxiliary coal-burning engines capable of giving the vessel a speed of 10.31 knots over a measured mile, with an average daily consumption of four tons of coal.

CONDITION. The boards are very lightly rubbed. A minor repair at the front hinge has restored the tightness of the binding. On the front free endpaper verso: "Miss Buckland's School. Class III. First Prize for Geography Awarded to Edith Carr. Johannesburg, March 29th 1893". (Miss Buckland's was one of the first schools in Johannesburg.) No other markings, complete and undiscoloured.
