First edition: 111* pages - History, 778 pages, rebound in quarter brown leather with orange cloth boards – slightly insect scarred in the front, half title page, titled gilt on the spine, a very good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 209: The author refers to the defect hitherto existing with regard to Zulu writing, and claims that this work "is an attempt to remove that defect by supplying a new and original method of orthography based on phonetic

principles." The Dictionary is the result of twelve years' labour, and contains nearly 20,000 words. The Sketch of the Origin and Early History of the Zulu People extends to fifty- four pages.
