An Afrikaner, Burger hunted throughout Central Africa, particularly for buffalo which he had become well acquainted with while serving as a meat hunter for troops in Africa during the Great War. His narrative spans several decades, encompassing exploits from the Lado Enclave to the Belgium Congo, Tanganyika and Northern Rhodesia. There is also a chapter on hunting man-eating lions in the Mahenga District of Tanganyika.
