How it works

Arriving in South Africa in 1850, Lucas joined the Cape Mounted Rifles and took part in the Eighth Frontier War of 1850-53. He next accompanied Sir George Clerk as commander of a mounted escort to Bloemfontein, to arrange for the withdrawal of the British from the Orange River Sovereignty. He describes the capital of the later Orange Free State 'As desolate a place as it is possible to imagine'. He describes many hunting trips and the hardships suffered by game during periods of continuous drought.  (Dictionary of South African Biography vol. 3 pages 544-5)

While most of the text relates military adventures, the author found time to hunt wildebeest and lion in the kopje country near Bloemfontein. (Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books - Czech)

258 pages with 32 pages of additional books by Chapman & Hall at back. Page edges uncut, tinted lithographic frontispiece of Zulu warrior, 3 tinted lithographic plates. Original green boards with gilt vignette of a buck and title on upper cover and gilt title on spine. A neat copy.
