8vo (22 x 14 x 2cm) 192pp. + 220pp. Original hardcover bindings with white lettering on blue background to spine and front boards, and illustrations to front boards. With frontispieces and 22 monochrome plates throughout volumes. Collated and complete.

 

Both copies have been signed by the author on the verso of the full title page.

 

Johannes Meintjes (1923–1980). Painter, broadcaster, historian, diarist, author, costume and set designer, and playwright. Born at Grootzeekoegat near Molteno in the Eastern Cape, went to school at the Hoër Jongenskool in Riversdal and Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town. From his youth he was interested in painting and developed his skills.

 

Besides his enormous influence as an avant-garde painter, he was a prolific writer, and produced numerous biographies, histories, poems and novels, published his diaries. At the time of his death, Meintjes had painted more than 1 336 oil paintings, produced dozens of sculptures as well as hundreds of sketches, temperas, graphic works and watercolours. From the estate of the late Frikkie Oosthuizen, who presented the classical music programme 'U Eie Keuse' on Afrikaans radio.

 

Condition: Good. Vol. 1: Some rubbing and foxing to the boards and spine. Light crease to spine. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, and signature to front free endpaper. Previous owner's signature to page listing the illustrations of book. Light foxing to endpapers and pastedowns, and first and last few pages. Some foxing to the edges of textblock, and some stains to top edge of textblock. Some pages have small creases to their corners. Vol. 2: Light rubbing and foxing to the boards and spine. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Light foxing to the rear free endpaper. Some pages have small creases to their corners. Both volumes are well bound.
