"A Critical Survey of the Development of Educational Administration in the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and the Orange Free State. By Ernst G. Malherbe - Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Cape Town."

Inscription on the front end paper reads "Boys High School Malmesbury, Presented by Sir David De Villiers Graaff."

Sir De Villiers Graaff was a South African cold storage tycoon and used his wealth to finance part of the South African war effort during WWI. He was knighted for his services and entered politics soon afterwards.

A handwritten letter by the author accompanies this book which sheds some interesting light on the bibliographical details. It is addressed to Professor Pieter Duminy.

Translated from the Afrikaans:

"Dear Prof. Duminy, many thanks for your kind letter about "Education in South Africa 1652-1922". The copy that you have must surely be one of the 100 copies that Sir David Graaf, at the insistence of Dr. W. J. Viljoen, former Head of Education in the Cape, gifted to high schools in the Cape Province.

It may be of interest to you that a WITS student recently informed me that the book is currently offered at Struik for the price of R80. Therefore, if you're not desirous to keep the book as a piece of Africana, a tidy profit can be made if you sell it now and acquire the new edition, which will be reprinted in facsimile, at much lower cost!

This part, along with Part II which covers the period 1923 to 1973, will once again be published by Juta's.

Even though a few hundred pages are already at the presses, I'm still working on the chapters dealing with this last decade. However, it is slow going due to the lethargy of the State Department in providing recent details.

Our little house "by the sea" is on the beach, a few hundred paces north of the Salt Rock Hotel. We would very much like to see you here when you visit the North Coast again.

Warm regards E. G. Malherbe
