1 sheet of newsprint, pale green in colour, frayed along edges and with a crease across the lower corner.

This news sheet describes the Battle of Modder River on 28 November 1899 in careful detail. The report provides the time firing broke out and provides the number of casualties from De la Rey's "laager", Potchefstroom burgers, Ladybrand's burgers, Kommandant Hoopstad and the "Skandinaviese Korps". The bravery of the Ficksburgers, the capture of Kaptein Fichardt (Jacobsdal) and the losses suffered by the "Black Watch Regiment" are also described. The final paragraph reports that "... sedert gister 3 uur n.m. vijandelik kanonvuur had opgehouden".

De Volksstem was established in Pretoria in 1873 and was the first Afrikaans-Dutch newspaper in either of the Republics. Suppressed during the British annexation of the Z.A.R., it grew in strength in the years before the second South African War. During the War itself, the editor, Dr Frans Englenburg, accompanied Boer forces to the Natal front. He produced these "Veldtocht-Editie" news sheets from there between October 1899 and June 1900.
