Hardcover with dust jacket. 185pp. Illustrations in profusion.

Edition limited to 2000 copies of which this is #1726.

Published in 1979 to coincide with the centenary of the Anglo-Zulu War.

'The author has consolidated in one new volume all aspects of the history of Natal and Zululand which is common or germane to the Zulus and the white pioneers who developed the counrty into what it is today. Under the title "From The Land Of The Zulu Kings" he presents a largely pictorial, "Historical guide for Natal and Zululand" covering the events from the discovery and naming of Natal by Portuguese navigators under Vasco Da Game in 1497 to the collapse of the Zulu empire built by Shaka.

Apart from a wealth of pictorial material Mr. Smail has assembled a treasure trove of facts and information which can otherwise be found only in widely scattered and almost inaccessible documents and collections.  This detailed information would therefore be practically unavailable to the ordinary person. In one volume the reader therefore finds information of a kind which even the average historical treatise will have overlooked, and yet it is this intimate detail which adds depth and fascination to the persons and events which fill South Africa's colourful past.'
