The intent of its publication was to exculpate the fateful Anthony Durnford (who had been killed at Isandlwana) from Shepstone's accusations of incompetence, presumption and culpability for the loss of the battle. Frances Colenso was the daughter of Bishop Colenso - and hero-worshipped and adored Anthony Durnford. Edward Durnford was the younger brother of the fallen soldier. Both had access to insights both immediate and actual from their relationship with Durnford and from those who served during the war. Both were passionate and devoted to the book which laid the causes of the Zulu War quite firmly on the side of the British. The book had a luke-warm reception but has come to be a vital resource and reading for anyone interested in the Zulu War.

Chapman & Hall. 1880 1st ed. 491 pp with fold-out map at rear - the coloured map is by Henry Hall R.E.D. and published by Stanford on January 1st, 1880. Recased in black half-leather with new end papers, some sporadic foxing throughout.
