xii + 137pp + two fold out colour reproductions.

This edition is limited to 1,500 numbered copies. Nos. 1-100 are bound in full leather. This is number 42.

This is the personal narrative of a young Scottish officer, Lieutenant James Ewart, who spent the years from 1811 to 1814 on garrison duties in Cape Town with the 93rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot. A keen observer, his narrative of travels in the Cape is of particular interest as social commentary. Frontispiece is of a drawing by Ewart of Cape Town in 1813. The first fold-out colour reproduction is of his water-colour of Cape Town in 1814.

Later he accompanied his regiment to Florida and took part in the disastrous attempts by the British to capture New Orleans in January 1815. The second fold-out is a reproduction of his coloured chart of the Mississippi 5 miles below New Orleans showing the positions of the British and American troops. A. Gordon-Brown notes in his introduction that this must surely be of importance to students of American history.
