Clive Chipkin (who sadly died two weeks ago) does not simply succeed in furnishing a fascinating and passionate history of South African architecture, his masterly work, amongst other things, reveals the ambivalence of the modern movement when deployed in a colonial context. This is one of the most important texts to have appeared in the last few years. A must have for anyone interested in Architecture and Design or in Johannesburg’s evolution from mining shanty town to Metropolis.
