Ernst Alexander Zwilling was born into an Austrian German family in Osijek, Austria-Hungary (now in Croatia). His Viennese father was a lieutenant colonel in the military. In 1908, his family moved back to Vienna. In the 1930s, he traveled in German Kameron as a photographer and explorer.
