One of the first printed maps of Taiwan - it includes adjacent coast of mainland China.

This Dutch edition of Jacques Bellin's map of Taiwan, featured in the Abbe Prevost's 15-volume compendium, Histoire générale des voyages, was published in the Hague.

The Dutch edition of the book, with French title and text was not a reprint of the book published in c. 1753 in France; it was largely based on the English 'Collection of voyages and travels' by J. Green, and reworked by Prévost. This edition from The Hague, published in c. 1760, is less commonly available than the edition that was published in Paris - in both cities the volumes were published in sequence over more than a decade.

The original map was produced by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrography Office). The map was augmented by the engraver Jakob van der Schley who added a new Dutch title at the bottom.

The map is in fine condition.
