Ezekiel Mphahlele's scarce first book. The author was one of the founding figures in modern African literature and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1969.

This is a small fragile 60pp. booklet comprising 5 short stories. It is one of only 700 copies printed (Ref: The author's autobiography "Down Second Avenue") and seldom appears on the market. The following extract from a letter the author wrote to a book dealer in 1973 bears testament to its' scarcity: 'If one day A MAN MUST LIVE & OTHER STORIES - my first book of stories - Cape Town - African Bookman - turns up please let me buy it'. And this was 40 years ago! (This letter is currently on offer online).

This copy has a small signature and date on the front wrapper. The covers are a little spotted and the spine has some minor wear. Internally the book is very clean, unmarked and tight.
