Eunice BAGSTER (1804-1878). [‘My thoughts on prophecy’ (in the Bible)] a manuscript volume written in the form of two letters from Eunice Bagster to her niece, Cornelia Susanna Bagster (1846-1933). Birch Cottage, Old Windsor, April 24 1868 – April 25 1869 and dated at the end ‘13 June 1869’, followed by an addendum dated ‘July 10 1869’. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches; 206 x 130mm). Pp.1-219, ‘219’[220] - ‘221’ [222] + 2pp + 2pp, many pages with small mounted letterpress excerpts from the Holy Bible. Original black leather, spine lettered in gilt “On / Prophecy / E. B. / to / C. S. B.” (extremities rubbed, joints split).

A powerful unpublished polemic on the use of prophecy in the Holy Bible, Eunice Bagster explains her aims and methodology in first two paragraphs: “You ask me to give you my thoughts on prophecy, and I think [that] in gratifying your wish I cannot do better than adopt the style of epistolary correspondence, addressing you as if by letter. Let us imagine the Bible open before us, and beginning at Genesis we will trace the stream of prophecy from the Garden of Eden to the close of Revelation.”

Following in her father's footsteps? Eunice Bagster was the daughter of Samuel Bagster the elder (1772-1851) founder of the publishing firm of Bagster & Sons who, in their early days, specialized in Bibles with commentaries.
