This title was translated as \"Through Shot and Flame\" (London, 1903)and \"Mit den Burenkommandos im Felde\" (Munich, 1903). Presumably because it was difficult to find a copy of the Dutch original, the Pretoria publisher Protea chose to translate its recent Afrikaans version (\"Met die Boerekommando\'s\") from the German. At all events, the original book, of which the copy in the present lot is an excellent example, is now rare.
Brown cloth-boards with black decorations and decorative lettering to the panel and the spine. The original spine has been laid down on tape used to reinforce the binding. Decorative brown and black endpapers (possibly renewed). viii + 287 pp of text with occasional illustrations in the text.
The covers are bumped and frayed at the corners but otherwise sound. The restored binding is firm but no longer square. The endpapers and book pages are clean and undiscoloured and carry no ownership or other marks.
A more than decent copy of beautifully printed letterpress.
