Reginald Charles Fulke Greville (1866-1956) changed his surname to Maugham by Deed Poll in 1905. Educated privately. Secretary to Nyasaland Administration 1894. Consular posts in various parts of Africa 1896-1928.

Maugham, a career British foreign service officer, was in his time regarded as an authority on Mozambique, Central Africa, and Liberia. Born in Bury Saint Edmunds, he served in the Inniskilling Dragoons before getting early administrative experience with the colonial government in Nyasaland. He then held a series of positions in Nyasaland and Mozambique. In 1913 he became consul general to Liberia, a post he held for seven years before becoming consul general to both French and Portuguese West Africa, based in Dakar. Maugham's writing made him more widely known than most British colonial officials. Drawing on his extensive African experience, he wrote Portuguese East Africa (1906), A Handbook of the Chi-Makua Language (1909), Zambezia (1910), Wild Game in Zambezia (1913), The Republic of Liberia (1920), and Africa As I Have Known It (1929). Nyasaland in the Nineties was written in 1935. http://cosmos.ucc.ie/cs1064/jabowen/IPSC/php/authors.php?auid=49136
