Published thirty years ago, this book reminds us that vandalism of public sculptures, as happened recently in Cape Town, is nothing new. Co-author Alan Crump writes (p 14): "The tearing down and wanton destruction of public sculptures, only to be replaced by new effigies, is a well-known political action. One idol is replaced by another and in some cases materials are recycled, for example, reusing melted bronze . . . During the twentieth century, Russia has seen this twice . . . The same actions occurred in Nazi Germany and Mozambique . . . "

Unclipped colour-photographic dustjacket, white cloth-grained paper-boards, blue lettered to the upper panel and spine, plain endpapers, 71 pp of text illustrated by 45 colour photograps, index to 82 monuments and their locations, and maps of these locations (Foreshore, City, Gardens, Peninsula).

The copy is complete, unmarked and as new throughout.
