Rariorum, Africanarum, Plantarum, by Jan Burman 1738/ 1739 published by Boussiere in Amsterdam.

This rare first edition in brown leather has a split on the spine, upper and lower spine shows ware including all edges and corners of the front and back covers. Binding at the front end-paper shows delamination. There is spotting and age tanning to pages and a few sections showing minor warping due to moisture.

The overall condition of this book is fair to good.

This first edition was entirely devoted to plants of the Western Cape and consists of ten parts, nine titles with engraved vignettes, ten dedication leaves and a hundred engraved plates by Hendrik Claudius and other artists. Simon van der Stel arranged an expedition to Namaqualand in 1685 - 1686 and was accompanied by Hendrik Claudius of Breslau, many of these drawing originated from this trip.
