Publisher's red cloth binding with gilt titles on spine.

xi + 403pp. Ten illustrations (all present).

Inscribed by the author on the front paste down:

"Read at your leisure, and think kindly of your friend and neighbour George W. Higginson, the author, Feb. 1917."

I suspect this copy was inscribed to British Olympian Arthur Frederick Reginald Williams as there is an armorial bookplate neatly laid down underneath the author's inscription, bearing the name Arthur F. R. Wiggins. Wiggins took part in the 1912 Olympics and his team won silver for Britain in rowing.

General Sir George Wentworth Alexander Higginson (1826-1927) was a British Army officer who served more that 30 years in the Grenadier Guards. He was a veteran of the Crimean War and took part in the Battles of the Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and the Siege of Sebastopol.

He joined the Grenadier Guards at the age of 19 in 1845 and, despite his dangerous choice of career, lived to over 100 years of age.

A first edition inscribed by a VETERAN OF THE CRIMEAN WAR.
