'An account of philanthropic work in Natal during the initial phase of the war. The writer arrived in South Africa in November 1899 and proceeded to the hospital at Estcourt Convent. During a stay of five weeks she assisted the resident staff and provided the establishment with supplementary provisions and equipment. She gives a sombre account of events following the battle of Colenso when large numbers of casualties were admitted. Army officials generally elicit severe criticism and the writer alludes to the incompetence of certain generals then conducting military operations. On the homeward voyage Mrs Sykes visited the hospital ship Lismore moored in Durban harbour. The Portland Hospital and the Simon's Town Naval Hospital were visited during her stay at Cape Town.' - Hackett page 99
