Colour-printed dustjackets with b/w portraits, grey cloth-boards with gilt-on-red spine labels, plain endpapers, text illustrated with many b/w photographs (including with Churchill and Roosevelt) and maps

  • The dustjackets are complete but rubbed and chipped (see illustrations), but the boards and contents are better than very good - complete, unmarked and undiscoloured

This is the standard biography of the great South African statesman (British Second World War cabinet), general (and later Field Marshal) (South West African and East African campaigns), politician (though defeated as Prime Minister in the postwar South African election of 1948), and naturalist (author of many botanical and other natural history forewords and discoverer of a new grass species on Table Mountain, which he loved to climb), who lived for 80 years and died 70 years ago
