Recased in mid-green cloth-boards with gilt lettering and rules to the spine, plain laid endpapers, engraved tissue-guarded painting of cattle on the banks of the Orange River at Aliwal North as frontispiece, xx + 6-fold map + 523 pp of text (no index) + 6 further inserted plates and 6 woodcuts in the text. 

CONDITION. The binding, boards and endpapers are fine. Brown marks to the first 4 leaves and last leaf. An 1871 birthday dedication from his loving wife to Charles J Shelwell, upside down on the last leaf of the book. Light sunning of all the page edges. Otherwise complete, unmarked and undiscoloured.

A better than very good copy of a now rare title.
