Green cloth with gilt lettering to front and spines of all volumes.

4 volumes in 6 parts (volumes 2 & 3 each in two parts), 180 colour plates, many plain plates, and numerous text figures (figure 59 in volume 4 missing as usual).

Vol I - Thallophyta, Archegoniatae, Gymnospermae, Dicotyledones (Part 1). 36 coloured and 30 monochrome plates.

Vol II - Families: Podostomonaceae-Umbelliferae. 52 coloured and 28 monochrome plates. Slight borer damage to inside of boards, first few pages and last few pages. Text and plates are unaffected.

Vol II, Section II - 1925. has front part of the dust jacket. Also contains an envelope with various newspaper cuttings.

Vol III - Sympetalae, Section I - Ericaceae - Verbenaceae Families. 50 coloured and 20 monochrome plates. Very good condition.

Vol III - Sympetalae, Section II - Myoporaceae - Compositae families. 50 coloured and 20  monochrome plates. Minor wear to corners.

Vol IV - Monocotyledones. 42 coloured and 18 monochrome plates. 1915. Minor insect damage to inside of lower front board and first 3 pages.

Marloth was an analytical chemist by profession and soon after he arrived in Cape Town in 1883 he started a herbarium of South African plants. He was devoted to the search for rare flora and he went on botanical expeditions as far afield as the Karoo, the Free State, Botswana and Namibia. The originals of the colour plates were painted in Cape Town by artists such as Ester Smith and Ethel May Dixie and printed in Germany.
