Published to commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Witwatersrand and the Jubilee of the City of Johannesburg. Together with a survey of other gold fields in Africa from the Cape to the Nile and in the African Islands.

Owen Letcher was a South African author, trophy sportsman and mining specialist. He travelled in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and hunted along the Zambezi River. He is recorded as having bagged record trophies of Lechwe, Tsessebe, Puku and Reedbuck. He also hunted in East Africa, Uganda and along the Nile river.

He was born in England in 1884 and studied mining in Cornwall. As a young man he worked on the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. He later became the editor of the South African Mining Journal in Johannesburg. He was also responsible for establishing the Mining and Industrial Magazine of Southern Africa. He served as a scout with Jan Smuts in the German East Africa Campaign (WWI) and was a veteran of the Battle of Kilimanjaro. He was fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
