Published some two years after Baines's death from dysentery while he was in Durban: this book is arguably one of the explorer-artist's greatest achievements.

Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography, Volume 1, page 71. 'The volume is a most important work, and contains full information of every description upon the subject of the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashonaland ... The book also contains an account of the gold discoveries in the Transvaal...'

Baines provided much of the information for the large folding map inserted into the rear pocket. The map is in very good condition - some fold lines have been strengthened. The plates are complete and in good condition. The plates include a sepia bromide portrait and other inserts are in perfect condition and are particularly noteworthy.

A very good copy.

Ex libris stamp and signature of W H Coetzee, the artist. The first day cover issue the samps Coetzee's designed for the Voortrekker bicentenary.

This lot includes a loose printing of the short biography by Helen Luckett (Royal Geog. Soc, 141 (2), 251-258 and The Record of Baines’s paintings in the possession of the RGS.
