Transcribed from the original by Mrs. E. Bernhard and translated by F. O. Bernhard. Edited by E. E. Burke, Deputy Director, National Archives of Rhodesia. 8vo; original blue cloth; pictorial dustwrapper, with protector; pp. x + 314; frontis. portrait; 2 colour plates; monochrome full-page illustrations and some text illustrations; 2 folding maps in endpocket. Some tape marks to endpapers and flaps; earlier owner's inscription on front free endpaper; edges foxed. Good condition. "Carl Mauch (1837-1875) was a notable German traveller and geologist. In these Journals he describes his journeys in the Transvaal, to Lourenco Marques, to the Zoutpansberg and thence across Mashonaland to Senna and Quelimane. Besides being an observer of geology, botany, and the passing scene he was an acute critic of his fellow men. He provides the first written description of the Zimbabwe Ruins as we know them and his journey from these to the Zambezi gives the first available accounts of this part of Rhodesia. The original journals are in the Linden Museum, in Stuttgart, near Mauch's birthplace. They have been translated from photocopies supplied to the National Archives of Rhodesia and have not been previously available either in English or German."
