JUNIUS (pseudonym).

The Letters of Junius. Complete in one volume, with a copious index. The first American Edition. Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Prichard & Hall, 1791. Duodecimo (6 5/8 x 4in; 168 x 102mm). Pp. [i-iv, i-]ii-xii; 13-283; [i-xiii]. (Some light spotting and browning of text). Contemporary speckled sheep, flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt double rules, maroon morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, lettered in gilt (some damage to head of spine, small splits to joints, corners bumped).

A nice copy of the first American edition of this classic. Shipton and Mooney describe an edition to be published by Carey the same year but it is known only from an advertisement. The first authorized edition appeared in London in 1772. Appearing in Woodfall's "Public Advertiser" from January 1769 to January 1772, the "Junius Letters" were very outspoken against the government, especially against the actions and decisions of the Duke of Grafton and Lord North, and they expressed very pro-Grenville and Whig attitudes. Sir Philip Francis is most frequently identified as the author of these letters.
