Daniel DEFOE as a bankrupt. – LONDON GAZETTE official announcement
'The London Gazette', number 4246, 'From Thursday July 18. to Monday July 22. 1706', small folio (12 ½ x 7 1/2 in; 318 x 190mm), 4pp. Disbound.
In addition to the news from home and abroad, the advertisements include the following: 'The Commissioners in a renewed Commission of Bankrupt against Daniel Foe [sic.], late of London, Merchant, hereby give Notice, That he hath surrendered himself to the said Commissioners, and been twice examined, and that he will attend again on Tuesday the 6th of August, at 4 in the Afternoon, at the Chamber of Mr. Robert Davis in Essex-Court in the Temple, in order to finish his Examination, when and where his Creditors may attend, to shew [sic.] cause why a Certificate should not be signed pursuant to the late Act of Parliament.'
Defoe spent much of his adult life in debt and a significant portion as a bankrupt: he was a passionate advocate for reform of the draconian laws relating to insolvency. The present rare and quite ephemeral publication records a now all-but forgotten milestone on Defoe’s journey.
