"If I should wish anything back of my life, it would be to go on safari once again with Bror," said Isak Dinesen shortly before her death about her ex-husband Bror Blixen. And Bror's second wife, Cockie, agreed: "I was a fool. I never so regretted anything in my life as leaving Blix. He was a wonderful- unfaithful-husband, and the best love I ever had."

Bror Blixen, the original archetype of the Great White Hunter in East Africa, was romantic figure of mythic passions for women and for adventure: if ever a life exceded the legend, that life belonged to Bror Blixen. His exploits as a hunter were legendary; he was "the toughest, most durable white hunter ever to snicker at the fanfare of safari or to shoot a charging buffalo between the eyes while debating whether his sundown drink will be gin or whisky," according to Beryl Markham, author of West with the Night.

His magnetic sensuality was such that a friend once warned Blix's safari client that the most dangerous animal he might encounter would be Blix himself: " Guard your wife!" But Blix's friends, and even his ex-wives, insisted he didn't go after women; he simply never met a woman who didn't fall for him. His boldness and sense of adventure led Hemingway to use him as the model of the Great African Hunter in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber."
