This account of the progress of research from 1900 to 1946 has been prepared by Mr. Neville Jones at the suggestion of the Director of the National Museum of Rhodesia.

'Prehistoric study in Rhodesia may be said to have begun by the discovery (in 1900) of stoneflakes in an ancient ruin, of a hand-axe at Victoria Falls in 1903, and by the investigation of the so-called Bushmen paintings by Mr. Hall. Not till 1918, however, was the first serious attempt made to deal with prehistory on scientific lines; that was the year when the author of the present book and Dr. Arnold first carried out excavations in a cave in the Matopo Hills. The importance of the study of Rhodesian Prehistory received official recognition in 1932, when it was given departmental status in the National Museum. Mr. Neville Jones has from the first been closely associated with the study, and his survey in this book is of authority accordingly. He describes the building up of the Rhodesian sequence, the series of discoveries made in excavations in the caves and rock shelters of the area, the well known rock paintings, and the ironstone kopjes. The book is completed by a glossary and a bibliography.'
