The second volume of this two volume set's sub title is: "Containing the Natural History of the Cape, or A particular Description of all the Sorts of Animals and Vegetables in that Neighbourhood; as of Beasts, Birds, Insects, sea-and River-Fish; Trees, Shrubs, Plants, Herbs, Roots and Flowers. Likewise an Account of the Mineral Productions, and of the Sea-, River-, and Spring- Waters there. Together with some Observations on the Cape- Winds and Air. To which is prefix'd A Topographical Account of the colonies there; as, of their Extent, Rivers, Springs, Mountains Roads, Places of Note &c."

Later leather and marbled paper bindings with gilt decorations and titling on red and black title labels on the spines. Greenish coloured end papers. Speckled edges. Volume one has 20 prelims with pagination to xviii for the preface which is followed by the Table of Contents, numbered text pages to 365, 26 illustrations of which 2 are fold outs. Volume two has 20 prelims excluding the frontispiece and as with the first volume the preface is paginated with Roman numerals to xviii, followed by the table of contents. The text is paginated from 1 to 363 followed by a list of books printed for William Innys. A total of 17 illustrations including the frontispiece and fold out map. Four pages have 2 separate illustrations on them, giving a total of 13 pages of engraved plates containing 17 illustrations.

CONDITION DETAILS: This copy is listed at a low reserve price as it requires repairs and is a bit grubby. The upper board of volume one is detached. The decision to repair the bindings or to do a new rebind is the call of the buyer. There are several other faults such as the toning/browning of a few plates, one plate already has a repair, plus all the occasional foxing, spotting, soiling, etc.
