The half-title bears an ownership inscription of a member of the 1st Leinster Regiment. (Hackett, p. 127; Mendelssohn I, p. 56) \'A reproduction of letters published in the Manchester Guardian, together with an Introduction giving a concise account of the early stages of the campaign in Natal, and many plans and illustrations. There are detailed descriptions of the battles of Willow Grange, Colenso, Railway Hill, Pieter\'s Hill, &c. &c., and of the successive attempts to relieve the beleaguered town. The writer was evidently a great admirer of General Buller, and remarks that \"he gained laurels from his defeat that are not always won by victorious generals. He sacrificed, or let me say rather, he jeopardised, his own reputation in order to avert an irreparable sacrifice of his army.\"\' - Mendelssohn
