The 1st. edition of this highspot of the Golden Age of Illustrated books. Harrap. 1923. 4to. In the original quarter vellum and grey paper covered boards with ornamental gilt decor and lettering on the spine. With 48 colour plates and 48 calligraphic-style text plates all tipped on to grey paper. One of 2,000 copies printed in Britain, 250 of which were sent to America. A number of copies are thought to have been destroyed in a warehouse fire. Richard Dalby, in his "The Golden Age of Children's Book illustration" calls this book  "The most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920's".

An about very good tight copy lacking the scarce dustwrapper. Slight wear and rubbing at the extremes of the spine and all four corners are a little bumped resulting in some loss of paper over the corners. Ownership ex libris on the front pastedown but otherwise the book is unmarked. The endpaper hinges are firm and all pages and tipped in plates are intact, clean and without defects. A better that average copy of this large book with an attractive reserve price.
