How it works

Register

[33] leaves of colour plates, interleaved with captioned waxed paper. Oblong octavo. Ring binding, boards slightly soiled along edges.

Pierneef's (1886-1957) most famous commission, the panels were erected in the Johannesburg Railway station in 1932. They were cleaned by Pierneef himself prior to the Royal Visit of 1947, and placed behind glass. They were cleaned again in the 1960s, and then placed in the Railway Museum as it became evident that pollution was taking its toll. They were recently exhibited at the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch. "The station panels marked the peak in Pierneef's development as an artist" P.G. Nel, J.H. PIERNEEF, p. 142.
