8vo; original burgundy cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. xi + (i) + 309; several maps, incl. 3 folding. Spine very slightly frayed at ends, and sunned; corners a little bumped, and joints a touch rubbed; endpapers rather browned and hinges tender; some pages unopened and a few others inexpertly opened; blind-stamp to title page; prelims. a little foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. (Hackett, p. 174; Mendelssohn II, p. 110) \'A sketch of the South African War, compiled from a variety of sources, in order to supply what is represented to be \"an impartial account from a military point of view.\" The writer discusses the \"causes that brought on the war,\" which he states was engaged in to \"settle for ever the question of supremacy in South Africa,\" and he maintains that \"locally ... the war of 1899-1900 was just as necessary to South Africa as the French Revolution of 1793 was to Europe.\" The volume follows the campaigns of Generals Methuen, Gatacre, and Buller, and there is an account of the siege and relief of Ladysmith. Amongst the appendices will be found the Majesfontein (Magersfontein), Stormberg, and Tugela and Spion Kop despatches.\' - Mendelssohn.
