(Czech, pp. 76-7; SABIB 2, p. 570; Hosken, p. 100 [2nd ed.]) "A member of the Bechuanaland Protectorate Police, Hodson's duties carried him into Namaqualand and the regions of the southern Kalahari.  He hunted gemsbok, hartebeest, and springbok enroute, then journeyed from the Chobe River to Victoria Falls where he bagged lion.  Near the Nata River, he collected kudu, leopard and gemsbok.  F. Vaughn-Kirby also contributes a chapter on Lord Selborne's safari into Rhodesia after eland, gemsbok, kudu and water buck.  A popular work in its day that went through several printings." - Czech, An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950.  Apart from its obvious appeal as an exciting account of hunting and adventure off the beaten track, the book has great value as a record of the early history of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, and of the chiefs Khama and the Bamangwato.
