Lathrop S. DOUGLASS (1907-1981)

Copy typescript, titled "Ten Days Down the Colorado River Rapids", subtitled "A 300 mile raft trip through the Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead"

[No Place]: 1970. Quarto (11 x 8 1/2in; 280 x 216mm.) Pp.[i-ii], 1-78.  (Title page detached and spotted).The individual sheets each ''ring-bound' into a contemporary plastic folder.

An apparently unpublished account of a trip long-imagined by architect Lathrop Douglass: the author does appear to have secured his copyright by lodging a copy with the Library of Congress.

A well-written lively account of the trip (organised by the Chalet Club and Grand Canyon Expeditions): Douglass had a deep appreciation of the geological marvels that they travelled through, as well as describing the excitment, delight and discomfort that the trip evoked in him. It starts and ends in Las Vegas: "At last clean, and dressed in newly pressed city clothes ... I ventured to the Stardust to jon the gala cocktail party being given by Alan for all the group. How different everyone looked! ... And of all, Alan had changed the most .... a yachtsman and a financier, I discovered only now, all the way from Perth, Australia, for the America's Cup" (Alan Bond perhaps?)

"Lathrop Douglass (1907-1981) was an architect and urban planner who was a pioneer in the design of shopping centers in the United States and Europe."

"Lathrop Douglass was born in Kansas City, Mo. in 1907. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1929, studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France, and returned to Yale, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1932. Between 1938 and 1941, he worked for the Housing Board of the State of New York, and during World War II he was in charge of design for a repair program for bases, hospitals and utilities in Africa and the Middle East. After working for John W. Harris Associates for several years, he founded his own firm in 1947. During his firm's first years, he designed a series of office building for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and various affiliates. In 1956, he received first prize at the Festival International d'Architecture in Paris for his design the Creole Petroleum Building in Caracas, Venezuela."
