London, William Heinemann, 1895. First edition. 8vo., colour frontispiece and additional title, illustrations from drawings by the author, original green cloth gilt lettered in black on upper cover, lightly soiled, a very good copy.

The author was attached to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry during this operation on the Northwest Frontier.

In 1889 the Zhob Valley and Gomal Pass were taken under the control of the British Government and in December 1889, the town of Zhob, then known as Apozai, was occupied and named Fort Sandeman. The force was made up of the No.7 Mountain battery of the Royal Artillery and the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry of which, the author was a subaltern attached to F Company.

The Zhob Valley, easily accessible from Quetta and commanding several passes on the Afghan border, was of essential strategic importance to the British in their efforts to protect both Indian frontier and maintain supply routes to Cabul and Herat.
