Wouter Schouten (Haarlem, 2 September 1638 - October 1704) was a Dutch surgeon who published his East Indian voyage in 1676. When he was fourteen, Schouten was apprenticed to a surgeon and because he wanted to gain experience, and was driven by a desire to travel, he signed up with the Dutch East India Company in 1658 and, on 16 April of the same year, sailed the Nieuwpoort in the position of sub-surgeon on the ship the Nieuwpoort. After which he signed service for the Company for another three years. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wouter_Schouten
