  1. "For over fifty years no full story of the Jameson Raid was written," writes the author in her preface. "A fuller story may be told now that a number of documents about the Raid have become public . . . Furthermore, since all the chief persons in the story are dead, the secrets that protected some and injured others need no longer be kept." Oxford, 1951. Maroon cloth-boards, plain endpapers, vii, 271 pp of text, bibliography and index, map showing "The Transvaal and Surrounding Territories in 1895'. The boards and binding are fine, he spine is lightly sunned, there is an obliterated signature on the front paste-down. also a bookseller's ticket; endpapers lightly sunned; the contents are otherwise complete and very good, unmarked and undiscoloured
  2. Hammond, an American and a leading mining engineer on the Witwatersrand, was arrested and, as one of the leaders of the "uitlanders" who plotted the Raid,was sentenced to death - later commuted to a heavy fine and exile. Hammond returned to America and never travelled to South Africa again. The contents of his book, published in Boston by the Marshall Jones Company, were first published in two issues of the North American Review.
