1.) THE MOTORIST'S PARADISE
Published in 1927 by the Cape Peninsula Publicity Association.
112pp. Numerous photographs and two fold-out maps. A fine and unread copy!
'One cannot travel along the roads without being impressed by the large number of motorists met with who hail from outside the Peninsula. General Smuts said that he knew of no roads in the world that compared with those of the Cape. The purpose of this brochure is to indicate in what may be termed "nutshell" form, the attractions - many, varied and unique - offered to the motorist, and to outline a few of the more popular routes.'
2.) WITH YOUR CAR AT THE CAPE
First edition published by The Cape Peninsula Publicity Association in 1936.
Publisher's illustrated card covers with cloth spine.
72pp. Numerous photographs and a fold-out map at rear. A very good copy.
A vintage travel guide for the curious early South African motorist eager to explore scenic roads and interesting towns in and around Cape Town.
Here's an example from page 28:
'If, when you are in Paarl, you wish to know if you are speaking to an old inhabitant or to a new resident listen to the way he refers to his town. The old inhabitant will say "...and how do you like The Paarl?" The newcomer to the town will omit the definite article. It is The Paarl that is most worth seeing, that part of it that goes back to the days of the early Dutch governors. If you are enjoying the Cape and not merely covering so many miles of Cape highways you will recognise Paarl as a van der Stel period town. You will look at the size of the oaks, compute their age and know that you are in one of the early "Kolonies" of the Dutch East India Company.'
