Notwithstanding the fact that there was, and still is, a great interest in tugs, their owners, and the operations on and around the rivers Tyne, Blyth and Wear, it is surprising that, as far as is known, no history has ever been written about them. This volumes sets out, in nineteen chapters, to correct this omission by relating the story of all those companies which by liquidation, take-over, absorption or acquisition have formed part of the family tree which descends to the present-day company of Lawson-Batey Tugs Ltd. The period covered fully is 1840-1990 and there is a short postscript regarding the years 1991 and 1992.
