1. The Art of Trout Fishing on rapid streams: comprising a complete system of fishing the North Devon streams and their like: with detailed instructions in the art of fishing with the artificial fly, the natural fly, the fern web, beetle, maggot, worm and minnow, both natural and artificial. South Molton, Devon: W. Tucker, 1863. Small 8vo. Pp. [i-]xiii[-xiv; 1-]206 [207-208]. Half-title. Contemporary (possibly original) purple half morocco over bubble-grained cloth-covered boards, the flat spine divided into five compartments by triple gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second compartment (spine very slightly faded, very light scuffing to extremities). NB the preface ends with the words 'things of this life'.

Rare First edition - a fine copy. This was Cutcliffe's only published work on angling. At the time of his early death the author was a Surgeon-Major in the army of Bengal and professor of surgery in Calcutta, but his family’s roots were in North Devon where he perfected the techniques described in this  work.

Original brown cloth, titling on upper cover divided by a thin gilt rule with lozenge-shaped central section. (Affected by damp). Provenance: Tho: Robertson (inscribed twice and dated 1883). NB the preface ends with the words 'things of this life'.

[i-]xi[-xii; 1-]212. 1p, publisher's advertisements on verso of title page. Original cloth, titling on upper cover divided by a gilt rule 13mm. long.  (Damage to front free endpaper). NB the preface ends with the words 'things of this life'.
