Preface by A.P. Bender.

12 pages, original printed grey wrappers with a slight watermark on the upper cover, a very good copy.

From the Preface. 'This message from the heart of one who holds an honoured place in the golden treasury of British Literature – a distinction especially prized by us South African – was addressed to a public meeting of the Cape Town branch of the Jewish Territorial Organisation held at the Good Hope Hall on Sunday, July 1st, 1906.'

The prologue reads: 'That this mass meeting is desirous of placing on record its profound abhorrence at the continuous and unchecked outrages on the Jews in Russia and further that this meeting pledges itself to support the Territorial Organisation in its endeavours to secure an autonomous country for the Jews, and calls upon all friends of humanity to cooperate in this beneficent work, which should not fail to bring relief to thousands of Jews.

Schreiner's 'Letter on the Jew' was read by Cronwright-Schreiner at a Public Meeting of the Jewish Territorial Organization in Cape Town in July 1906; it was published in the Cape Times 2 July 1906 p.8; it also appears in a shortened version as Appendix F in Cronwright-Schreiner (S.C.) The Letters of Olive Schreiner London: Fisher Unwin 1924. https://www.oliveschreiner.org/vre?view=collections&colid=113&letterid=16

Jewish Territorial Organization - Organization founded by Israel Zangwill in 1905 to promote settlement of Jews in areas outside of Ottoman Palestine ("the Land of Israel") because he believed the Zionist movement could never secure a charter for settlement in Palestine. This approach was called Territorial Zionism. Zangwill rejoined the Zionist movement following the Balfour Declaration. http://www.zionism-israel.com/dic/Jewish_Territorial_Organization.htm
