In the late 1950's the South African Library started a survey to record all the known titles of books printed in, or relating to Southern Africa that were held in South African repositories. The project culminated in the publication of the four volumes of the South African Bibliography (SABIB) in 1979. A supplement volume (volume 5) was published in 1991 recording titles that were overlooked in the initial survey, and an index volume (volume 6) was published in 1997.

The South African Bibliography is a most indispensable aid for any Africana book collector or dealer.
