"Pascoe Thomas kept a full and faithful daily journal of the incidents of this important four-year voyage 1740-43". The journal includes general historical accounts of Chile, Peru, Mexico, and China; the description of the Cape of Good Hope (pp. 319 – 344) is a fascinating historical record of the Dutch possession. It is also a record of Anson's voyage to harass Spanish shipping along the west coast of South America in, concluding with the capture of a Manila galleon carrying £400,000 in treasure.

The book is bound in contemporary leather. The front pastedown has the bookplate of Sir Robert Eden, who also inscribed his name on the title page; he was the 3rd baronet of West Auckland, county Durham. The spine lower two of the six gilt-decorated panels on the spine are worn, to which there has been some restoration. The hinges have been strengthened with Japanese Tissue Paper. The text is clean, apart from the occasional page with light foxing. Generally in very good condition.
