Having had a number of unsigned T.O.Honiball Lithographs and publications pass through our hands over the years, we now have for the very first time the honour of offering a signed set from T.O.Honiball's "Theme and variations" collection. This rather scarce set comprises 5 individually signed, limited edition Lithographs, of which one is a printed and hand-signed folder containing the four remaining individually hand-signed prints.

Thomas Ochse Honiball was born on 7 December 1905 in Cradock. He attended school in Stellenbosch and did drawings for the school magazine. He studied architecture at the University of Cape Town (until 1926). In 1927 he began to study commercial art in Chicago, where he was introduced to American cartoons. On his return to Cape Town in 1930 he worked in advertising and later as a freelance caricaturist and cartoonist. From 1936 he worked for Nasionale Pers newspapers and in 1941 took over from D.C. Boonzaier as the group's political caricaturist, quickly becoming one of the best known South African cartoon artists. In addition to his political cartoons he also published the Oom Kaspaas series, wherein Uncle Kaspaas boasts about his colourful past to his cousin Nefie - always to be reminded by some unfortunate event of what had really happened. He loved to portray animals as having human personalities and qualities, and he produced two series to that effect. Jakkals en Wolf covered the good and bad times of two friends, a jackal and a wolf, while Adoons-Hulle related the experiences of a baboon family from the Magaliesberg. On retiring in 1974 he held his first solo exhibition in Pretoria and continued his political caricatures and cartoons until 1978. He died on 22 February 1990 in Montagu.
